This
A1 Audi rally engine is from Malcolm Wilson’s car now owned by David
Sutton of Historic Motorsport. It has under gone extensive restoration,
only parts that where good were the head and fuel injectors.
The
block was really a throw away as it had distortions, mains line boring
was well out and bores were badly worn. As it is an aluminium block and
no longer available it was salvaged by extensive machining.
In
order to strengthen the block a cradle was manufactured as in the past
the block had been welded. Helicoils had to be fitted on the mains and
head threads. Crankshaft was also damaged and a replacement was ordered.
Racing pistons no longer available had to be remanufactured.
The
dry sump pump shaft was badly damaged and new shaft had to be specially
remanufactured, machined and treated. Turbo was also in a poor state and
parts from Germany had to be ordered.
Wastegate also needed a rebuild with new parts. Due to oil failure
because of the oil pump damage the head had some damage to the cam
carriers and camshaft.
Total time to restore this engine to its original specification and
glory was nearly 5 months, which considering the amount of
remanufacturing and machining is not a bad result.
